National Instruments PXI PXI-4130 Source Measure Unit

The NI PXI-4130 (Part Numbers: 779647-30 and 779647-31) is a programmable, High Control S Ource Measure Unit (SMU) in a single slot, 3U PXI module. It has a single, separate SMU channel that provides a four-quadrant ± 20V output that consolidates the remote sense (4-wire). This channel is suitable for generating up to 40 W in quadrants I and III and sinking up to 10 W in quadrants II and IV. With five currents giving an estimation resolution of up to 1 nA, this accuracy source is perfect for design validation and semiconductor test applications that require automatic sources and sweep and additional high-precision estimates.

The PXI-4130 also incorporates a utility channel that can generate current or voltage with a 16-bit set point and estimation resolution. This output provides up to 6 V and 1 A, as a supplementary power supply to the SMU channel. Applications such as transistor characterization that require an accurate source of a constant current or voltage while releasing another current or voltage can benefit significantly from the decreased complexity, space, and cost that this module offers.

The two channels of the PXI-4130 Power SMU can act as either a constant voltage source or a constant current source, with a configurable consistency constraint for either mode. Additionally, the user can enable remote sensing on the SMU channel to increase the voltage output / estimation accuracy on the PXI-4130 SMU under test for high precision applications.

The PXI-4130 can be controlled either from the inside from the PXI’s rear panel or remotely via an auxiliary DC supply associated with the front plate, such as the NI APS-4100.

Verification
This section provides instructions for verifying the NI 4130 specifications.
Verification consists of generating and measuring a series of outputs using the NI 4130, verifying the accuracy with the DMM, and comparing the results to the calibration test limits.

If the results fall within the test limits, the NI 4130 meets its published specifications, and adjustment is optional. If the results fall outside of the test limits, you must adjust the NI 4130.
Verification tests the following NI 4130 specifications:

  • Voltage programming accuracy
  • Voltage measurement accuracy
  • Current programming accuracy
  • Current measurement accuracy
  • Voltage load regulation
  • Current load regulation
  • Voltage line regulation
  • Current line regulation
